Photography Print & Frame Guide

Comprehensive solutions for 8×12″ and 10×14″ prints

Preserving Every Pixel – Honoring the 3:2 Ratio

Your Complete Print & Frame Resource

This comprehensive guide provides detailed information on printing and framing options for the 8×12″ and 10×14″ formats.

WHY 3.2 RATIO MATTERS

We believe in preserving the integrity of your original composition. The following section explains why maintaining the native 3:2 aspect ratio is essential for photographic integrity.

The 3.2 aspect ratio is the main format of most digital cameras, preserving the original composition as seen through the viewfinder. Cropping to fill other aspect ratios means sacrificing valuable pixels that represent my creative vision. It maintains the integrity of landscapes, preserves important details, and honors the original composition.

Cropping an original capture to fit into a frame size is no justice either to the untold troubles taken to bring the beauty of wild life and landscapes to light or the potential of an image to create awareness on the context of a subject. An 8×10″ crop of an 8×12″ image robs you and me of 20% of the original capture.

Also maintaining the original 3.2 dimensions allows for larger prints without quality loss.

Almost all the images displayed in Galleries and Store here as well as those made available for download preserve 3:2 ratio, irrespective of if they are with or without a border.

My lenses are happy of the opportunity given to show off all that they captured in the wild!

* Mat window openings are typically cut 1/4 inch smaller than the image dimensions to hold the print securely and avoid gaps.

** In a floating frame there’s a gap between the edge of the artwork and the frame. This gives the impression of a floating artwork.

Due to the vast number of framing possibilities, we cannot list every combination here. Explore our Mockup Gallery to see visual examples of how your photographs might look once framed.

In addition to the sizes shown above, 6×8″, 12×18″, 16×20″, 16×24″and 20×30″ frames also suit 2.3 ratio images. However, Pre-cut Mats with an 9.75″x 13.75″ opening are widely available. a Custom-cut Mat or a built-in border will bring the beauty of images this elegant size.

Please contact me if you wish to have a built-in border added to an image instead of using a mat for it to fit into the frame size of your choice. A Built-in border is a white (or colored) border already added to an image using editing software.

FAQ

Q: Will my 8×12 print fit an 8×12 frame?

A: Yes! The file is exactly 8×12 inches at 300 PPI. If your frame has a matte, ensure the window matches 8×12.

Q: What if I don’t have a trimmer?

A: Most print shops can trim prints to standard sizes for free!

Q: How can I avoid spending for a custom-cut mat with a 10×14” window for my 10×14” print?

The 10×14” print already has a 1” border and it will fit into a 10×14” frame perfectly. If you want it to be place in a larger frame while avoiding the use of a custom-cut mat, you can request me to customize it with a border of your choice. No additional charge.
