NARRATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography is a major force in explaining Man to Man.
-Edward Steichen
A Space for the Unclassified
I created this space to address a gap in how digital platforms categorize visual art—a gap that often forces metaphorical or narrative work into literal, reductive boxes.
The Issue: Narrative Doesn’t Fit Literal Categories
Most photography platforms are built for discovery by subject matter (e.g., Portraits, Wildlife, Landscapes). This works for literal imagery but fails for work where the true subject is an idea, emotion, or story — where physical elements are symbols, not endpoints.
Placing a piece like “Tethered Memories, Where Promises Were Made” under “Exteriors” is like cataloguing a novel under “Paper Products.” It’s technically true but misses the point entirely.
The Solution: A Home for Narrative Photography
This page is dedicated to Narrative Photography — images that tell or suggest a story, evoke feeling, or provoke thought.
On Developing the Concept
The framework for this “Narrative Photography” section was refined through extensive dialogue and exploration of the genre’s boundaries. These conversations helped crystallize the distinction between literal subject matter and narrative intent, and inspired the creation of the poetic search tools you see here.
This page is my invitation to you to experience photography not as a document of a thing, but as a vessel for story, memory, and emotion.
A Different Way to Discover
Here, images are presented in Series and accompanied by Artist’s Statements, allowing deeper stories to unfold across multiple frames.
Alongside a standard search box, you’ll find a poetic search dropdown — a curated list of evocative terms meant for discovery, not transaction. Sometimes you don’t search for an image; you stumble upon it.
You’re invited to explore. I welcome your thoughts and reflections in the comment sections below each series or image. Your perspective is part of the conversation this work aims to start.
My collection of captures is growing . Newer captures, probably better ones 😀will be added here on a daily basis.
Limited editions of selected images from this gallery will be available for sale (as download or as framed photographs) in Narratives. You are required to sign up and login through the Account page before making any purchase.
Shaping This Space Together
This “Narrative Photography” section is an ongoing experiment. Did the poetic search terms guide you? How did viewing work in series affect your experience? Your feedback on the model itself is welcomed here.
